Well, in French & Spanish, both words have the same root and mean “box” or “case”. It’s really more a box than a case I would say. Now “caisse épargne” and “caja de ahorros” both mean “Savings bank“. “Epargner” is a slightly old verb that means “to save” while “les épargnes” is the “old” noun that comes from it. In Spanish, “ahorrar” is the verb “to save” (money), and the noun “los ahorros” means “savings”.
